WRSCup1a1The West Riding Cup

1909-99

A Cinderella competition if there ever was one. The West Riding Cup in its later life was seen as a glorified pre-season kick-about. Barely tolerated by the clubs, often featuring disinterested or second string line-ups, the competition died an almost unnoticed death in the summer of 1999 - exactly 100 years after its inception.

However, we liked the West Riding Cup. It heralded the coming football season after the seemingly interminable summer break. The new season with its optimism, fresh faces, newly painted grounds and lush green turf. Inevitably, that bright feeling of innocence was soon tainted as the season got underway. But, in the bright sunshine of late summer the West Riding Cup seemed to epitomise the rebirth that every new campaign brings.

The West Riding Cup was first competed for in 1910/11, when Bradford Park Avenue were the winners. City have won the trophy on numerous occasions - the last time in 1993.

A magnificent trophy - many exhibition visitors who came to see the FA Cup on October 26th commented that the West Riding Cup was more impressive!!
