Mark Mellors
Keeper Mark Mellors joined City from Sheffield United in March 1909 for £350. He'd previously played for his hometown club Notts County as well as Brighton & Hove Albion. When Mark arrived at Valley Parade the club was fighting against relegation from Division One. He replaced Martin Spendiff between the sticks and City underwent something of a revival. In the last game of the season City needed to defeat Manchester United to avoid the drop. Mark was the hero of the day as City won 1-0. In the closing minutes he was knocked out as he threw himself into the path of a vicious drive. He was propped against the goalpost as City defended the resulting corner. At the final whistle the crowd carried Mark shoulder high from the field.
His greatest feat came during the FA Cup winning campaign of 1911 when he conceded only one goal. Mark retired in 1918, he remained in Bradford becoming a successful businessman in the wool trade, forming the company Mellors, Munro & Co. He was a regular at Valley Parade until his death at his home at Tranmere Park, near Guiseley in 1961 aged 81.
